Chichen Itza - Maya ruins about 2.5 hours from the Gran Bahia Principe.  This is one of the best know Mayan ruins in the world and the premier Mayan site on the Cancun peninsula.

Xel-Ha Ecological Park - all kinds of things to do at this water park, which includes river floating, cenote swimming, beaches, rain forest, snorkeling, dolphin encounters and a trip to the Mayan ruins at Tulum.  Significant discounts the larger your group is.  This is a very popular park and is much more laid back than Xcaret.  It's only about 10 minutes from the Gran Bahia Principe

Cozumel Jeep & Beach Adventure - travel 45 minutes north to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry to spend the day in Cozumel.  It runs every hour and every day of the year.  The ferry crossing takes 45 minutes.  Join a tour where groups of 4 drive their own jeep to the secluded beaches on the opposite side of the island.

Akumal Bay Turtle Snorkel - a shallow bay located just over an hour south of Cancun and about 5 miles north of the Gran Bahia Principe resort.  This is a low cost excursion you can arrange yourself to snorkel over the top of turtles feeding on seaweed.  Take a taxi from your accommodation or be adverturous and flag down a colectivo (a van operating like a bus) for an inexpensive ride.  The Bay is well known.  If you don't have snorkel gear it's easy to come by at the bay at places like the Akumal Dive Shop.
