Cambodia is officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia.  It is located in Indochina and is bordered by Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.  The population is around 15 million and the capital is Phnom Penh.  Cambodia was a French protectorate from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century and has a significant influence in the area.  The country was subjected to US bombing as part of the Vietnam War when efforts were made to disrupt the Khmer Rouge and the Vietcong.  Today Cambodia is best know for the World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat and for the Khmer Rouge atrocities in Phnom Penh during the late 1970s.

Visas:

You can obtain a visa upon entry to Cambodia, but be prepared for a lengthy experience, including baggage checks, visa fees, health checks and entry fees.  Check your specific country requirements at VisaHQ.

For a list of exempt countries, visit Project Visa.

Currency:

The Cambodian currency is the riel, but the US dollar is extremely popular.  We recommend carrying US cash in fresh clean bills and exchanging it for small amounts of riels as you travel.  The Thai baht is also widely accepted.
