Bermuda is also known as the Bermudas and the Somers Isles. It includes over 180 very small islands with a total area of about 20 square miles and a population of about 60,000. The largest island includes the capital of St George’s and the city of Hamilton, which is a common ship registry designation. Bermdua is located about 600 miles east of North Carolina in the Atlantic and is well north of the main Caribbean island chain. Originally claimed for Spain by Juan de Bermúdez in 1505, Bermuda has been under British influence since 1609. Bermuda is well known as being part of the Bermuda triangle where strange disappearances of water and aircraft have been popularized. It is also famous for Bermuda shorts, which are often worn by men in combination with dress shirts, dress shoes and ties. Bermuda is on the exit route for hurricanes that have circled through the Caribbean in the fall.
