Europe is a traditionally popular tourist destination for North Americans and Europeans.  The establishment of the European Economic Union and the Schengen Zone have made it very easy for visitors to move freely about the continent.  There are 26 European countries in the Schengen Zone and there is no passport control when crossing borders between these countries.  Croatia is not a member of the Schengen zone, but applies a similar visa policy.  The United Kingdom, Ireland and Russia are not members of the Schengen Zone and apply their own regulations.  In fact, Russia is more properly considered part of Asia, at least geographically.

There are 18 members of the Schengen Zone that are also are members of the European Economic Union and use the Euro as currency.  This also makes life easier on travellers.  Switzerland is a notable exception, as they continue using Swiss francs.  Other exceptions include the Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Hungary, Iceland, Monaco and Sweden.
