HAYS, ALBERTA
I (Tim Freiberg)
taught elementary school at Hays, Alberta for several years in the late seventies. I
remember the friendly people, the strong sense of community and the best behaved
children imaginable. You could always tell when you were approaching Hays on the
dirt roads by the friendly waves from the drivers who were approaching you. The
students I taught always got a kick out of me being their teacher when I
obviously didn't know the first thing about their most important subject -
farming. I couldn't tell a combine from a 5th wheeler and I didn't accept
absence excuses based on rock picking. I didn't believe the elementary
students who told stories about driving standard pickups, 3 ton trucks and large
tractors, but I was proven wrong in every case.
I've been living on Vancouver Island now for
more than 20 years. Two of my children, Tracie and James, were born in Taber. My
daughter Kathryn was born in Duncan, British Columbia. After my divorce from
Evelyn, I married again and changed my last name to Anderson. I currently work
as a financial services manager in charge of 75 accounting staff for the
Province of British Columbia.

In August of 2002 I returned to Hays for the 50th
Anniversary. Viki, Kathryn and I saw the parade, the opening ceremony, the
auction of the first 50th anniversary book for over $1,500, the outdoor church
service and the pancake breakfast. I was proudly reminded of my small
contribution to the community and appreciative of the efforts of those who
organized the event.
